# Chicken Shawarma with Barbecue Sauce

Chicken shawarma is a delicious Middle Eastern dish that consists of thinly sliced spiced chicken wrapped in a flatbread with various toppings and sauces. It is usually cooked on a vertical spit, but you can easily make it at home in the oven with this simple recipe. The barbecue sauce adds a sweet and tangy twist to the traditional shawarma flavors.

## Ingredients

– 1 kg (2 lb) chicken thighs, boneless and skinless
– 1/4 cup barbecue sauce
– 2 tablespoons lemon juice
– 2 tablespoons olive oil
– 4 cloves garlic, minced
– 2 teaspoons cumin
– 2 teaspoons paprika
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
– 1/4 teaspoon turmeric
– 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
– 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
– 8 pita breads or flatbreads
– Hummus, lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber, pickles, cheese and hot sauce for serving

## Directions

1. Cut the chicken into thin strips and place them in a large ziplock bag or a bowl. Add the barbecue sauce, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic and spices. Seal the bag or cover the bowl and toss well to coat the chicken. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to overnight.
2. Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Spread the chicken in an even layer on the prepared sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and cooked through.
3. Warm the pita breads or flatbreads in the oven or on a skillet. To assemble the wraps, spread some hummus on each bread, then top with some chicken, lettuce, tomato, onion, cucumber, pickles, cheese and hot sauce as desired. Fold or roll up the breads and enjoy!
