# How to make a classic margherita pizza with pizza sauce, cheese and herb
Margherita pizza is one of the most popular and simple pizzas in the world. It consists of a thin crust topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and fresh basil leaves. The name comes from Queen Margherita of Savoy, who reportedly enjoyed this pizza during her visit to Naples in 1889.
To make a classic margherita pizza, you will need the following ingredients:
– Pizza dough (you can make your own or buy ready-made)
– Pizza sauce (you can use canned or homemade)
– Mozzarella cheese (preferably fresh and sliced)
– Fresh basil leaves
– Olive oil
– Salt and pepper
The steps are as follows:
1. Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F) and place a baking sheet or pizza stone inside.
2. Stretch or roll out your pizza dough into a thin circle, about 30 cm (12 inches) in diameter. Transfer it to a lightly floured surface or a piece of parchment paper.
3. Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edge. Sprinkle some salt and pepper over the sauce.
4. Arrange the mozzarella cheese slices on top of the sauce, covering most of the surface. Tear some basil leaves and scatter them over the cheese.
5. Drizzle some olive oil over the pizza and slide it onto the hot baking sheet or pizza stone in the oven.
6. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the crust is golden and crisp.
7. Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
